Extra EA-300

GAPiston single-engine

Last updated: 2026-04-21

The Extra EA-300 is a German-built unlimited aerobatic aircraft powered by a 300 hp Lycoming AEIO-540, capable of plus-or-minus 10g and used globally for competition aerobatics and advanced upset recovery training. It is a workhorse of European EASA general-aviation training fleets, used at both DTO and ATO operators for hour-building and rating progression. Its straightforward piston single-engine layout is ideal for early SEP rating training.

What is the Extra EA-300 used for in flight training?

The EA-300 is the tool of choice for pilots pursuing advanced aerobatics beyond the basic manoeuvres covered in PPL syllabi. Its plus-or-minus 10g airframe and immense roll rate allow instruction in outside manoeuvres, snap rolls, and competition sequences not possible in standard trainers. European ATOs offering upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) use the Extra alongside simulators. Competition aerobatic pilots train intensively in the EA-300 toward FAI international competition standards.
