Radiotelephony and Language Proficiency

Flight Radiotelephony Operator's Licence — authorises radio use in aircraft. Required in most EASA states before PPL issue. Involves a practical radio communication test and often an ELP assessment. Some states issue it with the PPL; others require separate application. Not difficult if you've practised during training.

Standardised assessment of aviation English ability. Levels 1-6. Level 4 (Operational) is minimum for international flying/FRTOL. Level 4 renewed every 4 years, Level 5 every 6 years, Level 6 never expires. Tests pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension in aviation scenarios.

Standard ICAO/EASA phraseology: startup/taxi clearances, takeoff/landing, circuit calls, position reports, frequency changes, VFR transit clearances, emergency calls (MAYDAY/PAN PAN), transponder operations, ATIS interpretation.
