Zlin Z 242 L

GAPiston single-engine

Last updated: 2026-04-21

The Zlin Z 242 L is a Czech all-metal, low-wing, two-seat aerobatic trainer powered by a 200 hp Lycoming AEIO-360, used across Central European ATOs for PPL(A) and aerobatic endorsement training. It is a workhorse of European EASA general-aviation training fleets, used at both DTO and ATO operators for hour-building and rating progression. Its straightforward piston single-engine layout is ideal for early SEP rating training.

What is the Zlin Z 242 L used for in flight training?

The Zlin 242 combines docile handling in normal flight with genuine aerobatic capability, making it an efficient dual-purpose trainer. Central and Eastern European ATOs have traditionally favoured Zlin aircraft for their metal construction simplicity and the manufacturer's regional support network. The 242's aerobatic approval allows instructors to teach unusual attitude recovery and basic aerobatics within the same type used for ab-initio PPL training. Students gain confidence handling the aircraft beyond normal flight parameters.
