The Short Mayo Composite represents an innovative approach to long-distance transport, first flying in 1937. This experimental aircraft measures 15.5 meters long with a 22.3-meter wingspan, powered by four engines achieving 341.2 km/h. The unique design allowed the Mayo component to be carried aloft by the larger S.21 Maia before release for independent flight. This British ingenuity addressed the aeronautical challenge of combining heavy payload with sufficient fuel for intercontinental distance, pioneering aerial refueling concepts through physical aircraft separation.
