The HD 55 reconnaissance flying boat of 1929 represented mature Heinkel seaplane design, optimised for extended coastal patrol. Its 14-metre span and 800-kilometre range suited Baltic and North Sea operations, while 194 km/h provided adequate reconnaissance speed. The flying boat hull configuration enabled flexible basing from river and coastal locations.
