An instrument rating typically costs €8,000–20,000 depending on single- vs multi-engine and how much approved simulator time replaces aircraft hours. The competency-based IR can be cheaper for pilots with existing IFR experience.
How long it takes
Most students complete an IR in 2–4 months. Expect around 40–55 hours of instrument instruction, a portion of which can be flown in an approved FNPT II simulator, plus theory and a skills test.
